What is Council Tax?

Council Tax is paid by every person who lives in or owns a property (houses, flats etc.).

Your Council Tax goes towards the cost of services provided by Mid Suffolk District Council, Suffolk Council, Suffolk Police Authority and your local Parish/Town Council. We collect all the charges and then pass the required amounts to the other services.

Find out more about what council tax is and how the money raised is used.

Who has to pay the Council Tax?

There is one bill for each home whether it is owned or rented. Who ever comes first on the list below will be the person who has to pay the Council Tax for the property:

  • Owner-occupier
  • Leaseholder
  • People who pay rent
  • Residents who have a contractual licence to occupy the property, for example, people who live in tied cottages
  • Residents with no legal interest in the property
  • People who own the property but do not live in it

How do I know how much Council Tax to pay?

You will be sent a Council Tax Bill at the beginning of each financial year. This will tell you what you need to pay and when. Payment is due on or before the due date.
We presume that your circumstances will remain the same for the full year; therefore you must notify us immediately if there is a change.

How is the amount of my Council Tax calculated?

The Valuation Office Agency which is part of the Inland Revenue puts each property in one of eight ‘valuation bands’ based on how much it would have cost on the open market on 1 April 1991.  Your band is shown on the front of your bill.

Cracking down on fraud

Councils have a duty to protect the public funds they administer, and may use the information held on their records for the prevention and detection of fraud. We may share this information with other organisations responsible for auditing public funds for these purposes.
All those receiving or applying for Council Tax benefit must, by law, provide original documents to prove their identity and income.  This is to stop people receiving benefits when they are not entitled to them.

More information on council tax and housing benefit

The Council is required under section 6 of the Audit Commission Act 1998 to participate in the National Fraud Initiative (NFI) data matching exercise.
Council Tax data will be provided to the Audit Commission for NFI and will be used for cross-system comparison for the prevention and detection of fraud.
