Responsible Dog Ownership

A responsible dog owner:

  • Ensures that their dog wears a collar and tag showing their owners name and address
  • Keeps their dog on a lead, especially near livestock or in designated areas.
  • Does not let their dog stray. It is an offence to let your dog roam the streets. There are financial penalties if your dog is picked up by a Dog Warden and is impounded.
  • Trains their dog in basic obedience so it is under control at all times
  • Always carries a poop scoop or plastic bag. Clears up after their dog when they foul (in some areas this is a legal requirement)
  • Vaccinates and worms their dog regularly, grooms it frequently to check for fleas, and seeks veterinary advice for treatment.
  • Does not leave their dog in vehicles in the hot weather.
  • Prevents unwanted litters by having their dog neutered/bitch spayed.
  • Has their dog micro-chipped.
  • Ensures that their dog does not become a nuisance to their neighbours.
  • Ensures that their dog receives a healthy well-balanced diet and plenty of exercise

. A healthy pet is a happy pet, and a happy pet is a loving companion.
