Renovation Grants
Renovation Grants from Mid Suffolk District Council provide financial assistance towards the cost of carrying out substantial repairs or improvements to ensure that the property meets the Decent Homes standard.

Additional funding may be available to supplement Disabled Facilities grants.

These grants are discretionary and availability is subject to budget restrictions.

Eligibility is in accordance with the latest Private Sector Housing Renewal Policy.

Renovation Grants are available to private homeowners, landlords and in some cases tenants with a repairing obligation, for major repairs and improvements.

Eligibility

  • the property must have been built more than 10 years ago
  • the property must not be a second home or holiday home
  • you must have occupied the property for a minimum of 3 years prior to your application (if you are an owner occupier
  • only available to Landlords whose portfolio is two private rented dwellings or less subject to the following exceptions: landlord is a registered charity, the dwelling is subject to a tenancy regulated under the Rent Acts or other controls restricting rental income, energy efficiency improvements are being carried out.

Owner Occupiers and Tenants

Grants are means tested with a maximum grant available of £20,000.

Any grant approval is subject to conditions of occupancy for a period of 20 years. The grant is repayable if the conditions are breached or the property is sold.

Landlords

Grants are approved at 50 % or 75% of the cost of the eligible works, depending upon the tenancy, with a maximum grant of £10,000 or £15,000. The grant is repayable if the conditions are breached or the property is sold.

The type of works eligible for grant aid may include:
  • damp proofing;
  • provision of sanitary facilities;
  • provision of an adequate water supply;
  • re-roofing;
  • repairs or replacement of windows and doors;
  • repairs to structure;
  • improvements to kitchens and bathrooms;
  • provision of adequate insulation and heating.
Should the works require Planning Permission, Building Regulation Approval or Listed Building Consent, the grant cannot be approved until these applications have themselves received approval.

You should not start work until your grant has been approved. Grant aid will not be made available for any works that have commenced irrespective of whether the work is eligible for grant aid.
