Community Alarm Service
What is a Community Alarm?

Sometimes called Dispersed Alarms, these are units which plug into your phone line and enable you to call for assistance by pressing the button on the unit or the button worn round your neck.

Who can have one?

Anyone, of any age, for any reason. You do not have to live in council accommodation or be elderly to apply.

Is there a charge?

Yes. This is currently £38.22 per quarter (£2.94 per week).

Is there an installation fee?

Yes, a one off charge of £25.

Are the charges subject to VAT?

In some circumstances yes* (People with a chronic condition or a disability may not have to pay VAT).

How does it work?

The alarm system plugs into your phone line and automatically makes a call through to 'Assist and Assure' when activated either by pressing the button on the unit or the button round your neck. As soon as you call the system allows our specially trained staff to identify who is calling. They will then talk to you without you having to get to the phone as the alarm unit is fitted with a microphone which can pick up voices from a distance. Contact can then be made with friends, relatives, doctors or emergency services swiftly if necessary. Even if you cannot speak or be heard the operator will ensure some one calls to check you are alright.

How long can I use the service?

The Council encourages people to use the service on a permanent basis enabling people to stay independent for longer but it can just as easily be used for short periods such as convalescence, bereavement or fear of crime.

What do I need in my home?

You will need a plug in BT style telephone socket with an electric socket nearby, we supply and fit the unit and trigger. Connection is quick and the whole thing is easy to operate.

Who runs the alarm service?

Mid Suffolk Council is in partnership with four other Local Authorities and Housing Associations and the control centre, called 'Assist and Assure' (Calls to Assist and Assure are charged at local rates).

What happens if there is an emergency in the middle of the night?

Tunstal Response staff are on duty 24 hours a day 365 days of the year, someone will always answer your call.

Is there a charge for breakdowns?

No, the rental includes all maintenance and repair costs. Breakdowns are usually attended to the same day.

What do I do next?

The Community Alarms Officer will happily call and demonstrate the alarm without obligation.
