Young people to learn life-saving skills

Over 1,100 children from Mid Suffolk will be educated in life-saving skills, when they attend this year’s Crucial Crew event.

The event, which is organised by Mid Suffolk District Council and sponsored by the Rotary Club in Stowmarket, will run from Monday 15 to Thursday 25 June at the Museum of East Anglian Life in Stowmarket.

Crucial Crew, a national scheme, aims to teach safety techniques to Year Six pupils, through half-day sessions, which cover accident prevention, road and cycle safety, hand washing hygiene, fire safety, crime reduction and general unknown substance awareness.

Pupils will be faced with eight scenarios, from mock fire scenes to making a 999 telephone call, which will help them to gather information and skills that could help the whole family.

Organisations taking part are the Suffolk County Council Fire and Rescue Service, Suffolk Police, Western Area Substance Misuse co-ordinator, St Johns Ambulance, Rotary Club, EDF Energy and Suffolk County Council.

At the end of each half-day session each child will be given a goody bag full of useful literature together with an activity book and accessories to remind them of their day and to re-enforce all they had learnt at Crucial Crew 2009.
