Information events about One Suffolk and the new Boundary Committee proposals

A series of public information events are being held across Suffolk during April, so that people can find out more about the latest Boundary Committee proposals for the future structure of local government in Suffolk.

Officers and councillors from Suffolk County Council, with support from Mid Suffolk District Council, will be at the events, to explain about the consultation period that runs until 14 May 2009, and outline the two councils' support for the One Suffolk option.

Cllr Jeremy Pembroke, Leader of Suffolk County Council, said: "We are firmly committed to the single unitary option for Suffolk, because we feel this serves the best interests of the county as a whole.

"One Suffolk provides a stronger voice to influence government and Europe to bring extra money to benefit our communities.  It provides a simpler way for people to access the services that matter to them.  It prevents wasteful duplication of resources which costs taxpayers more.  It protects vital services for the most vulnerable adults and children in our communities. 

"In the current economic downturn, the best value for money option is One Suffolk.  It's the only option which is big enough to deliver quality services when less money is available and gives the best deal for Suffolk's council tax payers. 

"I would encourage people to attend these meetings, so that they can hear first-hand about the proposals, and how they can make their views known to the Boundary Committee."

Tim Passmore, Leader of Mid Suffolk District Council said: "I'm sure the residents of Suffolk are thinking that this process has gone on long enough and I agree, but we need to keep telling the Boundary Committee what we believe is best for Suffolk - one council. Mid Suffolk District Council has always believed that one council, providing all council services for all residents in Suffolk, will bring an enormous amount of benefits. This is really one of the only ways we will see significant savings for the local tax payer.  One council will also be able to shout to get recognition for local communities at a national level, and also work with them to make decisions about their own communities.

He continued: "I know people have already shown their support for our One Suffolk proposal, but we ask that people continue to show their support and write to the Boundary Committee again."

  • Mon 20 April, at The Oaks Children's Centre, Felixstowe, 7-8pm
  • Tues 21 April, at Sudbury Upper and Arts College, 7.30-8.30pm
  • Tues 21 April, at King Edward VI Upper School, Bury St Edmunds, 7-8pm
  • Weds 22 April, at Copleston High School, Ipswich, 7-8pm
  • Thurs 23 April, at Kingsfield PRU, Stowmarket, 7-8pm
  • Mon 27 April, at East Bergholt High School, Hadleigh, 7-8pm
  • Tues 28 April, Castle Manor Business and Enterprise College, Haverhill, 7-8pm
  • Brandon (dates and venue to be confirmed)       

They are open to anyone and there is no need to book in advance if people want to attend.
