Mid Suffolk Leisure Centre has been short listed for Centre of
the Year at this year’s FLAME Awards run by the FIA.
Mid Suffolk Leisure Centre started life back in 1975, and was
extended in both 1985 and 1995 increasing the range and quality of
facilities available. In October 2005 Sports and Leisure Management
(SLM Ltd) was awarded the contract by Mid Suffolk District Council
on the basis that SLM would implement an investment and improvement
programme that would see the centre develop into one of the premier
fitness locations in the region.
The leisure facility attracts visitors from the whole community,
a good cross section of ages, abilities and interests and there has
been huge increase in the number of visits since the refurbishment
took place. The site also operates more than 50 exercise classes a
week and the swimming lessons programme has over 1,600 children
enrolled.
Commenting on the nomination for the site, Anselm Gurney,
General Manager, said “Getting to the final is a fantastic
achievement when you think that we are up against leisure centres
from all over the country. It is great to get this sort of national
recognition for the high standard of service we provide. Thanks
must go to all the colleagues who have contributed to us getting
this far and also to our customers for their loyalty and
support.”
The site has already successfully got through the first three
rounds of the competition and is now through to the final round of
judging. The centre will find out if they are the overall
winners in mid July.
Portfolio Holder, Cllr Diana Kearsley, of Mid Suffolk District
Council said, “We are delighted with our partnership with SLM. This
achievement demonstrates their commitment and professionalism to
managing leisure facilities to a very high standard for both our
customers and our Council.”
The FLAME (Fitness Leadership and Management Excellence) Awards
recognise and applaud excellence and best practice within the
health and fitness industry. It provides clubs with a rigorous
independent assessment to help benchmark the facility.
