Mid Suffolk residents are still streets ahead when it comes to
recycling and minimising their waste.
Figures released by the Department for Environment, Food and
Rural Affairs, which measures the level of waste for each council
in the UK, show that Mid Suffolk District Council is still top of
the national league for the amount of dry recyclables
collected.
This year, Mid Suffolk residents have even managed to improve on
the 2007/08 effort, increasing the recycling rate from 34.2% to
37.1%. This now puts Mid Suffolk’s recycling rate at almost 3% in
front of the other 398 authorities in the county.
Cllr Roy Barker, portfolio holder for environment said: “This is
once again great news; a big thank you goes out to all our
residents. We are aiming to improve these figures further for the
next year and retain our place at the top of the league. The
residents of our district are providing a fine example to the other
districts of our county, and are helping to make Suffolk the
greenest and cleanest county in the country.”
He continued: “I would also like to thank our recycling team for
spreading the message of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Recover
throughout the district. Our message to other councils is to catch
us if you can, because we want to be top again next year.”
Mid Suffolk is also fourth in the table of councils with the
lowest household waste arising per head of population.
It is hoped that with the expansion of the garden waste service
in Mid Suffolk it will increase our recycling figures even further.
