During the process of determining a planning application members
of the public that could be affected by the proposed development
can express their views to the council. There is a time period
during which comments should be made, usually 21 days from the date
that the application is advertised via a site notice or weekly
press list in the local newspaper, or where a neighbour has been
notified by letter from the planning department. The council has a
duty to take these views into consideration when deciding the
application but only where the views represent what is known as
“Material Planning Considerations.”
Fact sheets on some of the issues have been produced by
Communities and Local Government and can be viewed
here.
Comments can be in favour of ,or against the application. Some
applications are decided by planning committee. In this case you
are also entitled to have your say during the committee meeting. If
you would like to speak during a planning committee on an item that
is being discussed during that committee meeting you should make
yourself known to the Committee Clerk on the day of the meeting.
You will be limited to three minutes. Normally only one objector
and one supporter will be allowed to speak. You may find it useful
to get together with other objectors or supporters and agree a
spokesperson to present your views.
You should be aware that written comments will be placed on the
application file and made available for viewing by any interested
member of the public. Comments cannot be made over the telephone.
If you have commented on an application, you will be notified in
writing of the final decision.
To make a comment on a planning application you must do this in
writing or by email to the Local Planning Department.
However we have provided the facility to comment online which will
ensure your comments are received quickly and directly by the case
officer.
