How to Appeal Against a Planning Decision

Applicants who are unhappy with the Local Planning Authority’s (LPA) decision, or the fact that the LPA has failed to make a decision within the required period, on their planning application have the opportunity to appeal.

The Right of Appeal

You can appeal under a variety of circumstances, but there is no third party right of appeal. For example a member of the public cannot appeal against a decision taken on someone else’s planning application.

Details and guidance on appealing against a planning decision can be found in the booklet: Making your Planning Appeal (PDF, 1.1Mb).

Appeals are not dealt with by the Local Planning Authority, but by an independent body called The Planning Inspectorate.

If you decide to make an appeal you will need to fill out an appeal form, available from the Planning Inspectorate. You can contact them using the details below.
