How Planning Regulations Are Enforced

Part of the responsibility of the Local Planning Authority (LPA) is to enforce planning regulations, making sure that development takes place in accordance with permitted rights and granted permissions.

The council has a range of powers available to:

  • find out whether a breach has occurred;
  • identify what harm has been caused; and
  • remedy the situation.

The Enforcement Team within the LPA is here to investigate complaints and concerns regarding development that is allegedly taking place without the required consent or permission.

You can pass on any complaint or concern to our enforcement team but please remember to add the following details:

  • nature of complaint - i.e. someone has built a conservatory without permission;
  • address of site – the address of the site where the development has taken place;
  • date when activities began – if known;
  • name, address and telephone number of the complainant.

NOTE: the identity of the complainant is confidential re: The Local Govt (Access to Information) Act 1985.

Complainants can remain anonymous if they wish to. However in this case it will be impossible for the enforcement team to advise the complainant of the outcome of any investigation.
