The Thornham Walled Garden Project

A therapeutic environment promoting personal growth.

a project for individuals accredited by Norfolk and Suffolk County Councils

It is well documented that working with plants is beneficial. Recent research suggests a dynamic link between horticulture, improved health, well-being and social inclusion.

Thornham Walled Garden is an ideal location for personal development through horticulture.

The two acre Walled Garden was recently restored and redesigned as a walled orchard. The extensive glass houses have been rebuilt to provide an accessible learning and personal development resource, with both indoor and outdoor facilities.

Individuals can develop educational, personal and social skills in a working environment, mixing with other users, visiting groups and the general public. It is an opportunity to be part of a place which is both tranquil and exciting.

Helping people grow

Gardening can change the lives of people excluded from many of the opportunities which the majority of us take for granted. Exclusion may be through disability, mental health problems or social disadvantage. The environment of the Walled Garden helps build personal confidence, self esteem and skills for future employment.

Individual support

Trained support staff are able to help the garden users develop a person centred plan suitable for their individual needs, enabling them to identify their own goals, benefit from using the facilities and fulfilling their ambitions. This personal plan also helps identify the support an individual might need in the future.

Taking part

Everyone who uses the garden can participate fully in the development on the project and it is hoped that they will be involved in future planning and developing new ideas.
