The council aims to improve its practices to generate positive environmental impacts in the district and the wider community. Green Suffolk
Creating the Greenest County is an aspiration that involves the whole county in enhancing the natural and historic environment and responding to climate change. Some of the initiatives are as below:
Warm homes healthy people fund
Following the success of Warm Homes Healthy People last year, we are pleased to introduce the scheme again this year. It is designed to support those most in need of additional help through the winter months.
Initiatives include:
- Borough and district councils will offer advice to anyone struggling to keep warm this winter
- Independent energy advisors will visit households struggling to pay their energy bills to offer advice and install measures to save money and energy
- Suffolk Acre roadshows to promote their good neighbour and community oil buying schemes.
- Match funding for Suffolk Foundation’s ‘Surviving Winter’ Appeal to allow other groups to benefit, including children and young people with learning disabilities
- Installation of FREE extreme temperature sensors in vulnerable people’s homes
- A befriending service
- A central telephone number (Winter Wellbeing Helpline) people can call for information, advice and support. Tel: 08456 037 686
- Referral and liaison with Suffolk GP practices - Health Liaison Officers will work with GP's, hospital discharge teams and charities to target residents whose health is affected by cold homes and support them in accessing the warm homes healthy people fund.
Roadshows
Warm homes roadshows which will offer advice and support on a range of issues including ,Interest-free loans for oil heating top-ups, electric blanket checks, money management advice, meals-on-wheels and supply of home safety and energy products.

- Shotley, Village Hall - 25 January, 10am to 2pm.
- Newmarket, Memorial Hall, High Street - 28 January, 10am to 2.00pm.
- Haverhill, Arts Centre, High Street - 31 January, 10am to 2.00pm.
- Stowmarket, Community Centre, Hillside - 15 Feb, 10 to 2pm.
- Elmswell Blackbourne Community Centre - 25 Feb, 10 to 2pm.
