About us

The Council owns and manages 3,413 Council properties, 5 homeless flats, 15 shared equity properties, 10 leasehold properties and 1,222 garages (figures at 7 September 2012) . Our responsibilities for these are varied, including:

  • Responsive and planned maintenance of the houses and garages including an out of hours service for emergencies
  • Allocating and letting the houses via the Gateway to Homechoice website
  • Dealing with reports of neighbour disputes and anti-social behaviour
  • Collecting the rent and advising people about the assistance they may be entitled to
  • Providing disabled adaptations in council homes

In addition to managing our own housing, we carry out a range of other functions, including:

  • Advising people about the housing options available to them and dealing with people facing homelessness
  • Working with housing association partners to ensure a continuing supply of affordable housing for households in housing need throughout the district
  • Improving housing standards in the private sector and bringing empty homes back into use
  • Managing a programme of statutory and discretionary grants to improve the suitability and fuel efficiency of private sector homes
