Join us 1pm-4pm this Saturday (15 July 2017) for the Grand Opening of the new Pikes Meadow Playground.
The day will also involve a variety of events for all ages, including traditional games, arena events, a raffle and a tombola with food and drink on sale from local stalls.
The new play equipment, designed for 2-12 year old children and housed in a fenced area, is the second phase of a £107,000 investment that saw a teenage/fitness area installed at the Meadow last October.
This funding was secured by the Friends of Pikes Meadow, supported by Mid Suffolk District and Stowmarket Town Councils. £12,000 came from Tesco’s Bags of Help local community grant scheme thanks to the votes of shoppers at Tesco’s Stowmarket store at Cedars Park and £16,000 from Viridor Credits’ Opportunities for Communities funding. Smaller amounts came from the Suffolk County Council Empowering communities fund and County Councillor locality funding.
The Friends of Pikes Meadow, who secured the funding and raised funds themselves (mainly from their signature Teddy Bear tombola stalls), chose the new play area with assistance from Mid Suffolk District Council and Stowmarket Town Council who also contributed towards the project.
Cllr Diana Kearsley, Mid Suffolk District Council’s Lead Member for Health and Wellbeing, said: “Pikes Meadow is at the heart of Combs Ford and it is wonderful to see new equipment being installed to help a new generation enjoy the Meadow. This is the result of a lot of hard work on the part of the Friends of Pikes Meadow and I’d like to congratulate them on their new Playground and look forward to seeing young children play on the Meadow for many years to come.”
Tammy Denny, Chair of the Friends of Pikes Meadow said: “After years of hard work it is brilliant to see the new facilities on Pikes Meadow taking shape, with the new Playground joining the fitness area installed last year. We all want the Meadow to be a place for all ages to relax and enjoy themselves and thanks to this generous funding and the support of the local community, we are seeing that vision become a reality.
“It was our dream to create a vibrant hub for the community and we feel that this has been achieved”
