Improving Gainsborough Road Stowmarket
Updates on improvement works to the Gainsborough Road area of Stowmarket
We're working with local partners in Suffolk to help regenerate and deliver a vision for Stowmarket
This next phase will focus on improvement works in the Gainsborough Road area at Mid Suffolk Leisure Centre.
You can access the two information boards, which are being displayed at the site of our solar carports, below:
During ongoing works, we'll always work hard to minimise any unnecessary disruption.
We appreciate your understanding and patience as we deliver our long-term vision for the town.
Information on this webpage will be updated regularly, so please check back for updates.
Project: 70 bay solar carport at the Mid Suffolk Leisure Centre car park
The solar carport structures and installation is now mostly complete, with the panels already generating electricity.
However, we are experiencing longer than expected delays receiving a specialist part, which is essential for completing the works. The delay is due to global supply chain issues beyond our control and unfortunately, the part is not expected to arrive until early Autumn.
In the meantime, we will be making 30 carport spaces available for use.
Electric vehicle charging points will be switched on as soon as it is safe for us to do so.
We begin installing the carports steel structure from mid-February.
We begin constructing the main elements of the solar carports on 13 January 2022.
Please note we are phasing closures of the car park, ideally, so that no more than 25 parking bays are out of use at a time.
Signage will be displayed to advise car park users.
We are carrying out preliminary works intermittently throughout December.
Groundwork investigations have been completed, and bespoke bases to hold the solar panels are being manufactured.
Work starts on site to install a 70 bay solar carport in the carpark at the Mid Suffolk Leisure Centre/Gainsborough Road site.
It will generate electricity on site, linking up to battery storage, to provide up to 23.7% of Mid Suffolk Leisure Centre’s annual electricity demand. It will also power up to eight new electric vehicle charging points (including two fast charge 22kW points).
Polysolar, the contractor, will work to minimise the loss of parking spaces during construction. However, some temporary disruption is unavoidable whilst these improvement works take place.
