Council Tax Support (2023/24)

The Government has provided additional funding for Local Authorities to support the most financially vulnerable households in England.  This support is specifically aimed at households who already receive Council Tax Reduction (CTR) and is designed to further reduce Council Tax bills.

The Government’s intention was to make awards of up to £25 to each person on CTR who was also resident on 1st April 2023 and had a balance left to pay for 2023/24. The guidance stipulates that where the balance of liability following the application of CTR is less than £25, then the liability should be reduced to nil. If a taxpayer has a nil bill (100% reduction applies) then no award of the additional support is to be applied.

Awards will be made automatically.  There is no requirement to make a claim. The Council Tax Support award will be applied to eligible 2023-24 Council Tax bills.

Whilst the Government expected Local Authorities to use this fund to reduce Council Tax bills by up to £25 per year, Local Authorities can use any remaining funding allocation to make such further awards as they decide fit.
