Babergh and Mid Suffolk district councils recognise National Homelessness Day
Preventing homelessness is a priority for Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils. Everyone needs somewhere to live and a place that they can call home.
Our vision is to end rough sleeping in our Districts, work with clients as early as possible to prevent homelessness occurring, further reduce the use of Bed and Breakfast accommodation, support households to secure accommodation in the private sector and ensure that every person contacting our service receives the same level of in-depth advice and assistance to resolve their housing crisis
Cllr Jan Osborne, Babergh District Council’s cabinet member for Housing said:
“The reality is that anyone of us is only a pay day away from becoming homeless.
“Having a home is not only a need but a right! Everyone should have a roof over their head and somewhere safe and secure to live.
“Babergh’s Housing team, together with our wider community partners work hard to ensure that as many people as possible have a home to call their own.”
Cllr Lavinia Hadingham, Mid Suffolk District Council’s cabinet member for Housing said:
“Rough sleeping is not just a housing issue and having a home to call your own is more than bricks and mortar. We know that there isn’t a ‘one size fits all’ solution for residents at risk of or finding themselves homeless and having to sleep on the streets.
“That’s why I encourage anyone who finds themselves in this critical situation to contact our Housing Solutions team as soon as possible to get the help and support they need and a safe and secure place to spend the night.”
What is Homelessness?
You may be homeless if:
- you're sleeping rough
- do not have rights to stay where you are
- you live in unsuitable housing
Please seek help and advice as soon as you think you may be at risk of losing your home. Contact our housing solution team as soon as possible - it may be possible to prevent you becoming homeless or help you to find somewhere else to live before you do.
One rough sleeper in our district is one too many.
Anyone sleeping, about to bed down or bedded down in the open air - on the street, in tents, doorways, parks, bus shelters or encampments - is a rough sleeper.
There are many reasons why someone might find themselves homeless or at risk of rough sleeping – there are many reasons why someone might find themselves homeless or at risk of rough sleeping – and solutions require us to take a holistic approach.”
The councils’ rough sleeping team - a dedicated team working to meet the specialist needs of those experiencing rough sleeping and where possible preventing rough sleeping from re-occurring. They team work closely with other outreach teams in neighbouring districts and a network of agencies seek to offer a holistic support programme including social care, mental health support, emergency and transitional accommodation.
