Council committee approves Bramford development

Outline planning permission for 115 homes in Bramford received the go-ahead today – providing a range of benefits for the village, including affordable housing and substantial public open space.

Applicant Hopkins Homes Limited sought permission for the development of land to the south of Fitzgerald Road in March 2019.

A decision scheduled for May 2020 was deferred and the revised report came back to today’s planning committee meeting, held virtually to ensure public safety during the current coronavirus outbreak.

Following input from planning officers, the applicant, objectors and supporters - and subsequent debate - the committee voted by six to two in favour of approving the recommendation that outline planning permission be granted, subject to conditions.  

Section 106 funding totalling £170,000 will be paid by the developer to accommodate sustainable travel options for residents of the development - and the wider community. Additional funding will also be allocated to improvements to bus stops, cycle paths, zebra crossings and other highways infrastructure.

The development will benefit from 40 affordable homes, ranging in size from apartments to bungalows, to help meet the district’s housing needs. Plans also incorporate almost ten acres of centrally located public open space - part of which is earmarked for a nature play trail.

Cllr Matthew Hicks, Chair of Mid Suffolk District Council’s Development Control Committee A said:

“This decision was not an easy one to reach, as the committee was made aware of concerns from local residents and Bramford Parish Council. However, after much consideration we believe the benefits of this development outweighs any potential harm, provided the applicant meets the conditions set out today.

“Plans include an abundance of public open space and a new children’s play area – ensuring our commitment to bright and healthy futures for our communities is met.

“The development will also provide much-needed affordable housing, and contribute financially towards public bus services in the area, supporting our council’s sustainable transport ambitions.”
