The Holbrook Great Run Local (GRL), previously held at the Holbrook Community Centre, has moved to the picturesque Alton Water Reservoir in Stutton.
The event, which started in April 2018, has encouraged local residents to get active through a choice of a 2k or a 5k run. The newly named Alton Water Great Run Local was made possible by Anglian Water who have partnered with Babergh District Council and Suffolk County Council to put on the event.
The Alton Water GRL is a great opportunity for local residents, and those looking to escape their urban jungle, to take advantage of the beautiful views the reservoir has to offer, as well as the facilities available at the site. This includes the café which offers refreshments and food, ample car parking and various sports related rentals such as bicycles and canoes.
The event, which takes place on a Sunday, is open to runners of all ability. Last Sunday’s event saw over 200 participants and volunteers attend, with many lacing up their running shoes and braving the cold to run around the reservoir.
The Alton Water Great Run Local is one of five GRL events across Suffolk, with runs also available in Needham Market, Newmarket, Southwold and Walsham le Willows. Suffolk County Council have been working alongside district and borough councils across Suffolk to establish more events in local communities supporting the ambition to become the most active county in England.
Councillor Margaret Maybury, Babergh Cabinet Member for Communities: “Great Run Local is a fantastic way for people to improve their health and make physical activity a regular habit and – in turn – ensure they enjoy a better quality of life for as long as possible. It’s also an opportunity for everyone to get out, making new friends and enjoy our local green spaces. Our support means more people than ever can get involved, whether they are running, walking or volunteering.”
Councillor James Reeder, Cabinet Member for Health, said: “These events are organised and led by volunteers within the community for the community, giving a space for people of all ages and abilities to improve their physical and mental health and wellbeing. We’re delighted to support the sessions and hope everyone taking part over coming weeks and months can enjoy more fun and fitness.”
A spokesperson for Great Run Local said: “It’s fantastic to now have a weekly running initiative at such an iconic location, adding to the already well established Great East Swim (launched in 2009) and the recent introduction of the Great East SwimRun. We were delighted to welcome over 200 runners to the inaugural event and hope the run continues to attract walkers, joggers and runners from across East Anglia to this all-inclusive, community event.
“A huge thank you to Anglian Water and Suffolk County Council for their support but in particular, the volunteers, whom without these fantastic individuals, free, weekly events like Great Run Local would not be possible.”
Angela Tobin, Anglian Water Events Manager, said: “We are delighted to be working with Suffolk County Council & Babergh District Council to open up our beautiful location and facilities to the community. Great Run Local opens up our sporting calendar to all ages and abilities and encourages people to come meet others, enjoy the outdoors and with the 2k and 5k option you can keep fit at your own pace and with family and friends. We look forward to welcoming everyone each week.”
The GRLs don’t only provide a great opportunity to exercise, but they also provide opportunities to take on some responsibility as a volunteer run coordinator or marshal. Volunteers are crucial to holding these events across the county. To find out more information about your nearest GRL, or to volunteer, please visit The Great Run Local website
