Works to modernise ageing public toilets at Gaol Lane in Sudbury get underway this week.

On Wednesday 13 September works are set to begin on a major public toilet refurbishment in Sudbury town centre.

Carried out by East Anglia-based LWJ Solutions, they are expected to take just over four weeks to complete.

Two unisex and one disabled temporary toilet will be available throughout the build.

It will include a complete face-lift of the current facilities – made up of four female cubicles, one male cubicle and two urinals, as well as a disabled toilet - which are now in poor condition.

The building will see new sinks, toilets, flooring, tiles and upgrades to the outside of the building installed.

Babergh District Council have committed over £50K to the project.

It is part of wider plans to improve public toilets in the town – with funding approved last week to progress plans for new toilets at Belle Vue Park.

Cllr Daniel Potter, cabinet member for environment at Babergh District Council, said:

“Upgrading the toilets at Gaol Lane has been something both we and Sudbury Town Council have been wanting to do for several years – so it’s great to see our plans finally able to come to fruition.

“These facilities are now showing their age – so bringing them up to date will play a key role in the regeneration of the town centre.”

The toilets are currently leased to Babergh District Council by their owners Sudbury Town Council, with the town council managing regular cleaning on the district’s behalf.

Ciaran Griffin, town clerk at Sudbury Town Council, said:

“We’ve been working alongside Babergh District Council over several years to plan the upgrade of these well-used toilets in our town.

“It’s great we’re now in a position to realise those plans, and I very much look forward to seeing them when finished.”

The number and type of toilets will remain the same as currently after works are completed.
