Communities brave the elements to show support for elite cyclists

Organisers of the Lloyds Tour of Britain this week thanked communities for braving the elements and turning out in force to support the race through town and villages across our districts.

Despite gusty conditions and sometimes torrential downpours, thousands of people cheered on the riders at the start and finish in Stowmarket, and throughout the 100-mile plus route through Debenham, Eye, Thurston, Lavenham, Sudbury, Hadleigh and numerous villages between.

Millions more watching living the live TV coverage heard commentary team, Marty MacDonald and Lizzie Deignan, talk about the unique character of our market towns and countryside and repeatedly praise organisers and communities for the very special atmosphere they had created for the riders and crew while in Suffolk.

This is the first time that two stages of the men’s race have taken place in the county, with both stages won by Olav Kooij.

Cllr Andy Mellen, leader of Mid Suffolk District Council, said:  “We’re so proud to have hosted such a prestigious sporting event and it was a fantastic day.
“The weather didn’t seem to put people off, big crowds turned out to support, and there has been a great atmosphere.
“We know this race will provide a boost to the local economy, and seeing some of the world’s top riders will hopefully inspire others to get out on their bikes.”

Cllr John Ward, leader of Babergh District Council, said:  “It was a brilliant day for Suffolk and our district.
“It was a major coup to host an international sporting event and our communities did themselves proud. There was great support along the route, and the televised race was a fantastic showcase of our beautiful landscapes, towns and villages. This will have brought serious economic benefits too.”
