Football club scores new stand after £100k awarded

Work to build a new stand at Needham Market Football Club’s stadium will soon be underway thanks to a £100,000 award from Mid Suffolk District Council.

Members of Mid Suffolk District Council’s cabinet agreed the funding at their meeting on Tuesday as they considered the latest round of Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) funding.

The levy is paid for by housing developers to the council, with the funding then earmarked for projects to help local infrastructure keep pace with housing growth.

Following the successful bid, the six-figure sum allocated to the club will be used to help construct a new 285-seater stand, providing modern facilities such as terrace seating, accessible toilets and a lift. Plans also include installing an eight bike eco shelter.

The award covers almost half of the project’s total cost, with the club also benefitting from £10,000 in capital grants earlier this year. The remainder of the funding comes from the Premier League Stadium Fund, the club’s own money and its directors.

Cllr Andrew Stringer, Mid Suffolk District Council cabinet member for heritage, planning and infrastructure, said:

“This is a great example of how CIL funding can be used to improve existing infrastructure and create lasting benefits in our district.

“Needham Market FC’s development will not only enhance the matchday experience for fans, but will also help contribute to the growth of the club and wider community.

“I will be looking forward to seeing the new stand in action and the opportunities it brings to the area in the future.”

David Clarke, chief executive officer at Needham Market Football Club, said:

“We are very grateful for the grant aid which enables this exciting project to commence. Many thanks to all who made it happen.”

The club also thanked officers involved for their professionalism throughout the process.
