What is Hate Crime?
A hate crime is any criminal offence which is perceived, by the victim or any other person, to be motivated by hostility or prejudice based on a person’s actual or perceived:
- Race or ethnicity
- Religion or belief
- Sexual orientation
- Disability
- Gender identity
A hate crime can include physical abuse, verbal abuse, intimidation, threats, harassment, and damage to property.
A hate incident is behaviour which isn’t a crime but is perceived by the victim, or any other person to be motivated by hostility or prejudice because of their characteristics.
Everyone is responsible for challenging attitudes and behaviours that foster hatred. Hate crime and hate incidents can cause great distress to its victims and the wider community and it is important that both are reported. The Council alongside partners want to ensure our community have the confidence to report hate crime.
How do I report a Hate Crime?
If you, or someone you know have been a victim of hate crime and you want to report it, you can report hate crime online at Suffolk Police or call them on 101.
Alternatively, you can report Hate Crime online, anonymously using True Vision. or report Hate Crime using Crimestoppers
In an emergency you should always dial 999.
