What is Housing Benefit?

Housing Benefit can help you pay part or all of your rent if you are on a low income. Most working-age people now receive help with housing costs through Universal Credit, but you may still be able to claim Housing Benefit if you have reached State Pension age or live in certain types of supported or temporary accommodation. The amount you receive depends on your circumstances, including your income, savings, household size and rent.

What is Council Tax Reduction?

Council Tax Reduction can help reduce the amount of Council Tax you need to pay if you are on a low income, even if you are working. The amount of support you receive depends on your household circumstances, including your income, savings, the people who live with you and the Council Tax you are charged. Since April 2023, eligible working-age residents in Babergh and Mid Suffolk can receive up to 100% reduction in their Council Tax bill, with support for pension-age residents continuing under the Government's prescribed scheme.
