Helping communities thrive during winter is key aim of popular grant

14/10/26
Bringing communities together and helping them thrive throughout winter is the aim of a returning grant from Mid Suffolk District Council.

The Living Well in Winter grant is now in its fourth year and exists to help local VCFSE (voluntary, community, faith and social enterprise) organisations deliver accessible, inclusive spaces and affordable activities during the colder months.

Since its inception, the grant has supported dozens of projects designed to bolster the wellbeing of residents – particularly in rural areas. Last year, successful projects included everything from warm spaces with coffee and meals to craft workshops and indoor activities.

Now, the grant window has reopened, with funding available for initiatives that promote social connections, physical and mental wellbeing, and access to welcoming community hubs.

Eligible projects might include lunch clubs, after-school clubs, low-cost sports sessions, community cafes or any other initiative that brings people together during a time of year where many may feel isolated.

Up to £2,000 can be applied for and applications must be submitted before 22 November.

Cllr Tim Weller, Mid Suffolk District Council cabinet member for environment, culture and wellbeing, said: “The Living Well in Winter grant is always a popular one in our district as it directly confronts issues which many people are worrying about – social isolation, mental and physical health, and keeping warm.

“Over the years, this grant has helped people to not only forge new connections, but even discover a new skill or hobby. For people in rural areas, this can be a real lifeline and provide a sense of fulfilment during a season where many are just looking ahead to the warmer months.

“Thank you to all of the community groups that have applied for this funding in the past and supplied a warm space or activity in their area. If you belong to an organisation that can offer something similar this year, please apply for our funding.”
