Wheelchair accessible vehicles

Under the Equality Act 2010, drivers of these vehicles have a legal duty to:

  • transport wheelchair users in their wheelchair
  • charge wheelchair users the same fare as non-wheelchair user passengers
  • help the passenger with mobility assistance, as reasonably required (for example, loading the wheelchair into the vehicle, should the passenger not wish to travel in it)

Taxi and private hire vehicle drivers who refuse to transport wheelchair users - or attempt to charge them more - face a fine of up to £1,000.

Exemption from duties (for drivers)

Taxi and private hire vehicle drivers are able to apply for an exemption from their duties toward wheelchair user passengers, should they need to (for example, for medical reasons).
